Music is one of the most essential parts of the travel experience. It helps us to pass the tough moments, helps us remember the good ones, motivates us to pack and go, and helps us to remember that there is always someone, something, waiting for us, home.

When I can, I take my guitar and play everywhere I go, with everyone I meet. But when I can’t, the Holy iPod comes with me everywhere. So the next time you are on the road or thinking about travel, here are some great travel songs to turn on:

1. Go solo – Tom Rosenthal

The soundtrack is an amazing song that’s about love, travel, and going far, without looking back. The lyrics are so powerful and describe so well how I feel when I am about to take off again and go for a new adventure. This is my homesick song.

For you love I will go far

I wanna be wherever you are

I’m know I’m coming back for you.

2. Simple Man – Shinedown

This is one of the songs that I have on repeat all the time when backpacking Europe. The lyrics are so meaningful and deep, that hit my soul every time.

Or take your time don’t live to fast

Troubles will come and they will pass

You’ll find a woman and you’ll find love

And don’t forget that there’s is a someone up above

3. Rivers and Roads – The Head and The Heart

Such a beautiful folk song. I just love the music that tells a story, considering that I’m a storyteller myself and this song motivates me even more to start writing music, one day. This is one of my favorites.

“…and I miss your face like hell.”

4. Bittersweet Symphony – The Verve

“Bittersweet Symphony” is a pop song for the ages, a song that will be as relevant to its time and place as “All You Need is Love” or “Johnny B. Goodie” were to theirs. Amazing song, amazing lyrics, this song can’t be described, only listened; I can’t travel without this symphony.

It’s a bittersweet symphony, that’s life

Trying to make ends meet

You’re a slave to money then you die.

5. Leaving on a Jet Plane – John Denver

We may plan to only go for a certain time, but, like the man says, we never really know when we will be back again.

6. The Passenger – Iggy Pop

You can’t leave without “The Passenger” in your playlist. Perfect for road trips, solo travel, backpacking, this song was created to travel.

Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window’s eye
He sees the things he knows are his

7. Come Away With Me – Norah Jones

This siren voice sends me far. So many things to see, so little time.

8. Hopeless wanderer – Mumford & Sons

Another folk song (so I think you can already notice a theme in my music taste)

9. Freebird – Lynyrd Skynyrd

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me
For I must be travelin’ on now
There’s too many places I got to see

10. Here I go again – Whitesnake

Sometimes traveling may be tough, the road is lonely and the destination isn’t always clear, besides we miss the people we wanted to be with us, but the dream is big enough to compel us to walk down that road time and time again. I have so many memories on this song, and it’s the first one I put on playlist when I hit the road again. It gives me that energy…
